Our Story

I’m writing this letter in hopes you will tell my story of my American dream and help spread the word as a client to your hairdresser. My name is Marsha Russell and I’m a hairdresser from Beverly Mass for the past 30 yr. My journey started in 2002 being a hairdresser and a salon owner for 20 years I was at a turning point of my life. Whether to stay working behind the chair continuing the path I was taking or to branch out with something new. Well be very careful what you wish for. So I decided to invent a product for the beauty industry that would help hairdressers new and experienced to raise the bar and to put more money into the hairdresser’s pocket. Within a week I had my first prototype.
I designed a hair foiling paper, which we call ZipA Foil. With the help of my partner fiancé, daughter, family and friends, we started a company PWÂI, LLC (People With An Idea), a start-up company involved in the development, manufacturing and marketing of innovative new products in the beauty industry. Let the whirl wind begin, within 4mon. we applied for our first patent, my partner gave up his successful welding business to join the beauty industry starting right in with writing a business plan my daughter who swore that she was never going to be a hairdresser, while working a full time job started night school at a local beauty academy. Very early on we were lucky to bring onboard an interested professor from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute a friend of a family member, who eventually be came one of our stock holders and key player. I was able to perfect our prototype and develop an educational program, hands on, by providing services to our wonderful client base from the salon. With the help of my friend and co-worker Pat, of 22 years who by far is my right and left hand. Involved herself with not only learning the product and service, where she could not foil before, but became a top foilist over night supporting the cause with teaching and donating her time at trade shows and school events. Scott my partner, fiancé and I, 7months into the project started a search for a machine builder. Oh by the way if you don’t know what you want or know how your product should be made, you better learn fast. Once we were satisfied with a builder, there was one section of the machinery that was never done before. At this point we needed to develop a section of the machine to complete the machinery. So that’s what we did, Scott and myself designed and calibrated the parts and then had a local metal shop make the parts, 8weeks and 5000 dollars later we were putting together our concoction with a bottle of wine on the dining room table and it worked. Weekly meetings planning our company’s direction, setting up manufacturing and product education, Oh yeh the Money. We set up a private placement so friends and family could invest then, setting up a factory, and finally waiting for BOB, our machinery, to arrive and he was late. We had two weeks to make product, and package it, before our first Beauty Show, the IBS in NY, we did it. The show was busy and hairdressers were eager to buy. But that was just the beginning; through the course of two years we have had our ups and downs. Learning about the market and how to get into it. Early on we realized we needed to educate the process. We created an instructional DVD to help, with starter kits that had all the tools. Hairdressers loved it at the shows, but were they getting it. We picked up a master distributor at an AACS school event thinking this was our savior, but no, it does not work that way. We have been in all the major beauty shows across the United States, Long Beach, Utah, Vegas, Ohio, Florida, Georgia, NY, Pennsylvania, and main stage in Chicago. We were in front of 300 educators in Ohio. We are now in our fourth year and as this goes we are still alive. We are starting to get salons aboard all over the world, it has been slow but that is the process. We have opened a salon in Beverly MA. called Limelite, to promote the product and services, to help market our product. We hope to create a chain of these salons with educational centers. Last winter we worked on the ABC show Extreme Home Makeover, for a wonderful family in Maynard MA. We had the honor to help in the salon and my daughter supplied wonderful products for the salon from manufacture friends in the industry. We also gave her a year’s supply of the ZIPA Foil. Scott and I just finished our new web site and that was a team effort, we are trying to get the word out with free education, zipafoil.com and a second site zipa.us. We are featured in a newsletter that is going around United States in Chair Talk with product review. We have been on the open market about 4 years, a family business, This whole process has been a 90-hour a week whirl wind; at times it’s been so rewarding and also grueling, but with family support making products and wearing many hats we stand proud, because we have a product that’s unbelievable. It will not only help the new hairdresser starting out, but it’s the most precise system in hair foiling art, that experienced hairdressers will love when they give ZIPA Foil a chance. Please check out our product and spread the word about our story.
Thank you. Marsha Russell www.zipafoil.com and zipa.us
